
Enough time had come. My bachelor’s degree was newly in hand, and I decided to accept the first job I was being offered ( it was the Great Recession and the fear of unemployment was very real). Thankfully, working together with high school seniors as they navigated the college application process turned out to become a great fit for me! I learned many things working at a senior high school (did you know there’s a software that calculates the likelihood you are going to obtain a snow day?!), and each fall was a lesson in exactly how difficult it really is to become a 12th grader.
Senior is tough year! You are in your hardest classes up to now, you are dealing with more duties, you’re hitting a milestone nearly every week…and then we ask you to college. 12th grade may never be effortless, but you can easily make it less hard. Though each pupil’s college process is unique, there are a small number of behaviors/mind sets that I have observed cause stress that is unnecessary and time again. Some call them the Four Horseman of the Appocalypse that is common by some i am talking about me), but they’re all avoidable knowing just how to recognize the signs!
Focusing too much on what you can’t change.
Can you keep worrying all about that C you’ve got in freshman English? Are you regretting your final decision to give up the track team? Many students invest their fall that is senior focusing the past, and it drains their time and energy like Snapchat drains my phone battery pack. In place of stressing about things you cannot change, take your time writing a well thought out essay, striving for great senior 12 months grades, and putting together the application that is best you can. Ignoring the advice of your elders.
Would you nod when your counselor speaks then instantly wipe the conversation from your memory? Do you reject your parents’ guidance like it is your job? I’m shocked…really, I am. Keep in brain that, with it,’ the adults in your life can offer important insight into your application process (and even help you identify your strengths so you can better highlight them) while they might not always be ‘hip and. Ignoring their advice can cut you faraway from some pretty information that is valuable so have you thought to take all of the help you’ll get?
Falling in love.
No, we’m not discussing the lab partner you’ve had a crush on for decades (them already) though you should really just tell! I’m discussing the head-over-heels feeling students often get for one university on their list. There’s a distinction between having a choice that is first being so fixated on a school you can’t even fathom going somewhere else. It’s called the school process for a reason—no one knows exactly how it shall end! You are admitted to your top choice (and obviously I hope your top choice is USC), I strongly encourage you to keep an open mind and find a number of institutions you would love to attend though I sincerely hope.
Avoidance.
Are you making things to the last minute? Are you currently putting down looking up what supplementary essays you will need to create? Are you reading this post on January 14th? You are procrastinating! Despite what you may tell yourself, no one works most readily useful under pressure (trust me…this is a ‘do as I state, not as I do’ situation). Multiple drafts are the key to a good essay, and making significant progress before the eleventh hour is the sole defense against a sloppy application. You’ve got enough in your dish senior year. If you don’t yet have a plan for how you are going to complete every one of your essays, supplements, applications, etc. make one! You don’t want to rush (or worse, forget something) in this method. Student Highlight: USC Student Body President, Edwin Saucedo

It’s Natalie Guevara and I’m excited to begin working with our weblog. While discovering subject ideas, I considered common concerns we have from prospective pupils and something of my favorites is definitely: exactly what’s it want to be considered a student at USC? And even though I’m an alumna of the college and had my very own experiences… that is great really want you to hear from current students with a bigger range of majors/involvement/background/etc. So rather than hear about most of the cool things I need certainly to say (many of you get an adequate amount of that), I’ll find current students to inform you about their experiences. For our very first installment, we’ve Edwin Saucedo, the pupil Body President for the Undergraduate scholar Government. He’s originally from South Gate, CA and is set to graduate this coming May 2017. Here is what he previously to state:
Four years ago, I found myself where many of you may be right now: frustrated with my personal statement and fed up with searching for the college that is perfect. It absolutely was hard sufficient trying to navigate college applications when neither of my parents spoke English or had pursued degree themselves. The stress of finding the place that is best to invest the next four years was extremely overwhelming.
As I think straight back inside my university application process the very first thing i need to say is, everything worked out better than I could have ever expected. When I applied to college we never ever thought I would become at USC. I expanded up in South Gate, CA where only 6% of the total population pursues a college degree. It’s understandable, We never imagined i’d find myself being the Student Body President my year that is senior here. The four years in between my year that is senior of school and senior year of university have brought on a number of lessons, experiences, and friendships we never expected. However, the combination of all of the these life that is unexpected has indeed led me to where I am today.
Being pupil Body President at probably one of the most prestigious universities into the country can be an intimidating job. It is not easy trying to express nearly 19,000 students who originate from over 100 different countries, are of all different races, and have extremely diverse backgrounds that are economic. However, it’s also a really rewarding possibility. Every i get to go into our student government office and ask myself: how can I make this university a better place for all students day? That is our objective in student government, to create the best undergraduate experience, and that’s why I decided to run for this position spring that is last.
I spend at least twenty hours each week listening to students’ experiences, asking them exactly how I really could be of any service, and connecting them to your channels that are proper this campus. On the other part of things, we advocate on their behalf to administration in efforts to create better campus policies, address any issues, and plan money for hard times of our campus. My part that is favorite however taking the information we discovered from both students and administrators and picking out unique solutions to addressing these dilemmas.
In student government we pride ourselves in being innovators and creative thinkers. We challenge each other’s ideas and provides suggested statements on improvements. During the end of the we come up with proposals on how to address each and every issue day. It is through these creative proposals that we have been able to get our students free Uber rides from 7pm to 2 am and have actually gotten a weekly farmers market on campus. But our work doesn’t end there. Over the length of the year our pupil government sets on over 300 free events for our pupils. These range between intimate discussions about our education system to bringing speakers like Laverne Cox or musicians like Diplo for our students to savor.
We shape the undergraduate experience and give students the chance to explore perspectives beyond their own; because that is exactly what college is all about. No matter yourself and be challenged by others whether you go to USC or choose elsewhere as your new home, dare to challenge. As President I always encounter students perspectives that differ from my very own, they’re not wrong or right but different, and that is okay.
You will end up, but instead what you will do once you get there as you approach the last months of the college application process don’t worry as much about where. University is time to explore and find your passion. I found my passion within student federal government and working towards increasing USC for current and future students. For you, that passion might lie in another activity. Regardless, enjoy your last months of high school and get prepared to embark in a journey that is new of unique and exciting experiences.
